Cat Exercise Wheel
- Product Review (submitted on September 30, 2018):
I have a high energy Abysinnian/DSH mix and a medium energy DSH. I really wanted to buy this product but was worried by some of the criticisms on the reviews. I bit the bullet and bought the wheel anyway and I'm really happy I did. Installation was pretty simple as long as you follow the video instructions (the paper instructions were next to useless) and in the video the instructor gave some really good tips. You do have to muscle your way through the steps but it does work and the pieces do for together. My wheel runs very smoothly and is very stable. One criticism that I have with the design is with the foam mats, they are slightly narrower than the track. Also my cat does tend to snag his claw in the small gaps between each foam patch.
After reading reviews, I was kind of worried that it would take my cats a while (if ever) to get used to the wheel. But for my Aby mix, it clicked in less than 30 minutes. Both my cats are highly motivated by laser pointers, so to start them out, I simply played around the wheel for a while. I never forced them on the wheel and just let them experiment with putting one paw on and hopping over. I also would stabilize the wheel with my hand so they wouldn't scare off when they climbed on it. Only once their four paws were on the track then I would let go of the wheel slowly to get them used to the motion. To habituate cats to new things it does take a lot of time and patience. It will take daily positive reinforcement on the wheel for cats who aren't as bold and active as mine.
